On Wings of Song  เป็นเพลงร้องลำดับที่ 2 ในเพลงชุด 6 Gesänge, Op. 34 ของเฟลิกซ์ เมนเดลโซห์น เป็นบทเพลงที่ได้รับความนิยมมากที่สุด ประพันธ์ขึ้นในปี 1835 ณ กรุงไลฟ์ซิก หลังจากกลับมาจากการทำงานเป็นวาทยกรอยู่ที่เมือง Düsseldorf ราว 2 ปี

คำร้องของบทเพลงนี้ นำมาจากบทกวี Auf Flügeln des Gesanges ของ Heinrich Heine นักกวีชาวเยอรมันร่วมสมัยเดียวกับเฟลิกซ์ โดยกล่าวถึงคู่รักในสวนที่มีธรรมชาติอันงดงามยามค่ำคืนราวกับอยู่ในความฝัน บทเพลงเริ่มด้วยเปียโนเปิดนำสั้นๆ โดยบรรเลงโน้ตในคอร์ดไล่เรียงขึ้นไปเป็นเสียงประสาน ซึ่งจะเป็นเช่นนี้ตลอดทั้งบทเพลง จากนั้นแนวทำนองของคำร้องจะค่อยๆ ลอยเข้ามาอย่างอ่อนโยน ในอัตราจังหวะ 6/8 บรรเลงโน้ตประจุด อันเป็นเอกลักษณ์ของเพลงร้องที่เมนเดลโซห์นชอบใช้ ทำนองมีโครงสร้างเป็นแบบ AB ง่ายๆ เมื่อเข้าทำนอง B เมนเดลโซห์นจะเปลี่ยน harmony ไปบันไดเสียงไมเนอร์เพียงชั่วครู่ เพื่อบรรยายถึงความตะลึงในความงามของสวน ในตอนจบของท่อนจะมีการช้าลงทุกครั้ง ด้วยเปียโนบรรเลง arpeggios ให้เสร็จ แล้วตามด้วยการลงคอร์ดเพื่อเสริมท้ายประโยคของแนวทำนองอย่างนุ่มนวลและแผ่วเบาว์ ~~ ​

          Auf Flügeln des Gesanges (On Wings of Song) is the song No. 2 in Felix’s 6 Gesänge for voice and piano Op. 34,  the most popular song of the set. Text setting is from the poem of its title by Heinrich Heine, German poet living during Mendelssohn's lifetime. The song describe the most beautiful night of a couple in the charming garden.

 

The composition was composed in 1835 at Leipzig after Felix moved back from working as a conductor in Düsseldorf for two years. It was very successful, so many transcriptions to the other instruments and also the translation of the German lyrics itself followed. The version I am bringing to perform today is transcribed for violin and piano arranged by Frederick C. Sauer. (So then it’s really song without words).

 

It is a prelude to my recital just like how this song was a prelude to my love for the music of the Mendelssohns.
